SPRATTY SAYS 25th August 2007Plenty of much needed rain brought a few unwanted disruptions this week with plenty of folks housebound for a day or so. On the home front, my morning sessions with the Old Man Roo seem to have concluded in a nil all draw. It was like he was waiting for me to come out the front door each morning, parking himself between me and the car; he was definitely on the front foot, as it were. Thankfully it seems he got bored and moved on. Footy wise the Redmen second grade side got rolled by a more committed Lismore outfit in a semi-final at Tweed Heads last Saturday, the boys tried hard but it was a long trip home with our tails between our legs. All eyes are on Rugby Park today for Grand Final qualifiers for the very talented Redmen u19 crew, and the undefeated First Grade outfit take on Ballina in what should be a beauty. Be early for a good spot. An issue that is topical is Chinese cars. I hate to dispel a few myths but I can say with some authority there will be no $5000 Corollas in the foreseeable future. The Aussie car market is crowded, fussy, relatively small and remote in world terms. The Chinese have far easier fish to fry closer to home in countries less fussy in terms of safety and quality. What we will see is carefully selected entrants and probably further rebadging, similar to the Dae Woo/ Holden Partnership in the profitable Commercial and All Terrain segments. You see Chinese love nothing more than making money and by the time they get the cars here, add a wholesale margin to a retail margin, shift them around our rather large brown land, cheap and cheerful loses it’s sense of humour. Watch them gravitate to where the money is. On the work front its been hard to keep up with the action, with lots of activity in both cars and caravans. Ford has come out fighting on the small car front and Paul Winmill continues to amaze with quantity and quality of products he unearths from goodness knows where. With the onset of wet weather don’t take any chances with your car; call into Victoria street and get it checked and let us keep it in tip top condition for you. Finally don’t forget to call in and see Chris McCaughey tomorrow for a chat about fishing, local history or even cars Happy motoring, Spratty |
